    Our Joey

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Joeymom, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, says, 'We want people to know that autism is not scary, but it does present challenges.' Her 9-year-old son, Joey, has autism and uses language in a different way. 'We are also interested in people understanding echolalia,' she says. '[Joey] assigns emotion to words, and will repeat those words to help express those emotions - even if the words do not necessarily fit with the current situation. For example, when he is happy, he might repeat lines from Mario Brothers shows. When upset, he might repeat words that he found upsetting and disturbing himself.' Despite these difficulties, they love Joey's trust in people and his fondness for math and science.

Joey is our autistic son. He is also beautiful, wonderful, intelligent, funny, and fabulous!
