Activists Shutdown DC Streets for Trayvon Martin

On the morning of April 7, 2012, activists of all colors and ages amassed at Meridian Hill Park, more commonly known as Malcolm X Park, to raise their voices in the pursuit of dismissing racism from society.
Representatives from the NAACP, the National Black United Front, and a large contingent from Howard University, joined with concerned citizens to march through Washington, to Freedom Plaza over two miles away.
Winding through city streets, blocking traffic, and waving signs, activists chant "I am Trayvon Martin," "No Justice, No Peace," and other civil rights slogans as cars driving-by honk wildly in solidarity.
A short program was put on by the Howard Players at Freedom Plaza. The small theatrical group performed a skit to the sound of the 911 tapes from the night of February 26.
Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman following an altercation between the two.
Martin had been on his way home from 7-Eleven when Zimmerman spotted him, and reported him to police as looking suspicious, perhaps on drugs. Zimmerman followed Trayvon for some time until the two came face-to-face.
Zimmerman claims that he was attacked by Martin before using his handgun in self-defense, yet many disagree with his statement. Martin died as a result of his wound. Zimmerman has not been charged with a crime.
