This iReport is part of an assignment:
Did you marry your prom date?
After meeting Shawn when I was 9 years old, our friendship had fizzled to mere acquaintanceship. We met through our parents who worked together at a college theatre. But he was quiet and shy, and I was too bold and wild.
After rekindling our friendship during my freshman year of high school, a mutual friend suggested that Shawn ask me to prom. Little did our friend know that the two of us had already met, and had even began talking again. After gentle persuasion from friends, Shawn eventually gathered enough courage to ask me to his junior prom. Giddy with the thought of having a second chance with my childhood crush, I bought a dress and prepared for our first big date. After keeping my parents awake at night while they cursed at me for being on the phone past midnight, and begging Shawn to take me to the movies with friends, he gave in and asked me to be his girlfriend. Five days later, I put on my light pink dress and pressed on fake nails to prepare for the big dance. We danced through the very last song, even though Shawn was too shy to have ever danced in public before. My mom picked us up in her minivan and we dropped Shawn back off at home.
Throughout the next 9 years, Shawn and I have become not only lovers, but best friends. He knows every dirty secret I have ever hidden, and I know all the things that make his skin crawl. We maintained a healthy relationship throughout my 4 years away at college, and he has been my primary cheerleader throughout my graduate education. If it weren't for Shawn coming back into my life, I doubt that I would be here today. He is my better half, my constant, my rock. He is every cliche metaphor and more, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with him by my side.
