Zimmerman- Is 2nd degree Murder the Right Charge?

George Zimmerman was just charged with 2nd degree murder. He turned himself in to authorities voluntarily. There are so many theories as to just what happened that night when Zimmerman and Trayvon had an encounter that resulted in the death of 17 yr. old Trayvon Martin. The media and public opinion have already convicted Zimmerman of murder, hate crime, racism and more. The facts will come out in a court of law now.

I think that charging Zimmerman of 2nd degree murder is a mistake, it should be manslaughter. 2nd degree murder is much harder to prove than manslaughter so Zimmerman may just walk.

The jury is going to see that Zimmerman did not run away, admitted to shooting Trayvon and told police what happened, the police released Zimmerman and only up until today was he charged with 2nd degree murder. They will also see that he turned himself in and that it took 40 some odd days after the crime took place that he was even charged at all, mostly due to all the pressure of the media and protesters. The prosecutor said public pressure and media coverage did not contribute to the charges being filed. I find that hard to believe.

This will be an interesting case to follow.  Do you have an opinion on what the correct charge should have been?
