The Rose Way of 1,500 Monks and Novices Through Bangkok, Thailand

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Amy072 shot these pictures of monks on a 5-day, 59-kilometer (37-mile) pilgrimage through Bangkok, Thailand, on rose petals. 'Roses are the symbol of love, so we pave rose petals for these monks to show love for Buddhism and love for the peace and serenity that they bring,' she explains. 'A pilgrimage of this many monks into a very busy city is very hard for it to happen. But Thailand is the place that can make the impossible happen. Once it happened, many people both Thais and foreigners were able to witness this historic event.' She says this is the first time such a pilgrimage has taken place in Thailand.
    - ssesha, CNN iReport producer

This pilgrimage consists of 1,000 monks and 500 novices, which totals 1,500. These monks will be walking in a pilgrimage for 5 days, 59km through the busy city of Bangkok, Thailand on rose petals the whole way. This pilgramage started from Wat Phra Dhammakaya in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand and will end at Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen Temple in Bangkok.

Many people from all walks of life came out to welcome these monks and pave rose petals for them. Everyday, people sat and stood on the sidewalk and watch with amazement. Since people in the city spend most of their time either at work or in their car stuck in traffic, as Buddhists, they might not have enough time to go to temples. So, since they don't have enough time to go to temple and pay respect to the monks, what is a better solution than to bring the monks into the city to them?

These monks walked by some well known places such as the Victory Monument, shopping centers such as Platinum Mall, Central World, and Siam Paragon. By having this pilgrimage, it creates opportunities for those who have faith in Buddhism to see that Buddhism still exists and is florishing here in Thailand, and for those who don't have faith in Buddhism, to want to learn and understand it. Going through the city will also open the eyes of tourists who are here visiting Thailand to see the beauty and peace that these monks bring as they walk through the hectic busy city.

Not only did the monks walk by famous landmarks and the shopping center in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, they even walked through something that exists in every major city in the world which is Chinatown. The Chinatown in Thailand is different from the Chinatowns all around the world because not a single Chinatown anywhere in the world has ever had 1,500 monks and novices walk through on rose petals before.

This pilgrimage drew the attention of many people from both different parts of Thailand and also from different countries all around the world. The monks contrasts with the city life because the monks represents tranquility as the city life represents chaos.
