    1940 Census - Murdock, Minnesota

1940 United States Census - Murdock, Minnesota, Dublin Township

Jannet Walsh, iReporter from Murdock, Minn., shares the details she learned from the 1940 United States Census about her family. She lives in the same house her father was born, and the family has been for the last 90 years.  The family lived in the Enumeration District, the counting area, inside the the village of Murdock.

In 1940 the family home in the village of Murdock, in Dublin Township,  was valued at $2,000. Her late father, Martin J. Walsh Jr., was age 15, a student at Murdock High School. Her grandparents were Martin J. Walsh Sr., age 53, and Jennie Walsh, age 54, with a daughter named Agnes Walsh, age 23, a teacher in the public school in De Graff, Minn., all living in the home.

Jannet's  grandmother Jennie  answered the census questions, according to the information as there was an "X" with a circle by her name.  Her grandfather was adsent at the time of the census, indicated with an "Ab" by his name.

All of  the family living in the house in 1940 have passed away, except for Jannet's aunt, Margaret A. Walsh, age 94, not listed in the 1940 census, as she was most likely off to college or working.

The census states that Jannet's grandfather, Martin J. Walsh Sr., worked 48 hours the week of March 24 -30, 1940, as a salesman for a newspaper, the Minneapolis Star and Tribune Company.

Most of the foundation of the house remains from a flour mill that originally was in the same location of the house, made from large field boulders.  A marker in the foundation has a date of 1917.  Jannet's great-grandfather, Stephen Foley, was known to have worked at a flour mill in Murdock, according to his obituary.  Most likely, the very location Jannet lives today.

Many of the families in the Murdock area orginated from Ireland, with several of the area townships named after locations in Ireland, such as Dublin Township.  Today, Murdock has a population of 303.
