Event in Brazil has the world trade union representatives and government officials
The president of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, vice president of Argentina, Amado Boudou - on behalf of President Cristina Fernandez - and vice-president of Colombia, Angelino Garzón, are confirmed attendees for the Second Congress of the Confederation of Workers / of the Americas (CSA), which is between 17 and 20 April in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil. They will also present the governor of Paraná and the mayor of Foz do Iguaçu. It has also been officially invited to Brazil President Rousseff.
They are affiliated to CSA, 59 national unions of 29 countries of the Americas, representing more than 50 millions of workers across the continent. The Congress of the CSA is held every four years. In Foz do Iguaçu, it is expected the participation of over 500 people, 450 from the Americas and 50 guests from other continents.
In Brazil, four unions are affiliated to CSA and participate in the Congress with high-level delegations. They are: the Workers Central (CUT), Labor Force, General Workers Union (UGT) and the National Confederation of Liberal Professions (CNPL).
In the European delegation, there is the presence of the presidents of the central Spanish UGT and Comisiones Obreras who led the recent general strike in Spain. Also the president of the central German DGB. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), based in Belgium, is also represented with a delegation led by Secretary-General, Sharan Burrow. The candidate workers for the direction-general of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Guy Rider, is also expected.
In the year that the United Nations and the Government of Brazil hold Rio +20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro, the theme of the 2nd Congress of the CSA will be "Sustainable Development, Democracy and Decent Work: Building a new society."
From the guidelines established in Foz do Iguaçu by the representatives of workers, the union movement in the Americas will set your action plan for the next four years.
"In a profoundly negative economic environment in the North, we believe that the Americas, with all its contradictions and inequalities, can be a source of alternatives to the neoliberal model," says Víctor Báez Mosqueira, secretary general of the CSA.
On the II Congress: More important event on the continent union, the 2nd Continental Congress of the CSA will take place from 17 to 20 April in Foz do Iguacu, Parana.
