Just outside of town...
Not all of the charms of Santa Fe are located in the densely populated downtown areas... the real feel of northern New Mexico is just outside the city, where views of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and the amazingly vibrant sunsets offer the best views.
A favorite destination of ours for a perfect sunset view is the patio at Betty's Bar at Encantado. With a large firepit framing views of the mountains and horizon, it's a perfect place to relax with a glass of local Gruet (sparkling wine), and a plate of Smokin' Nachos -- their bar menu has an amazing little dish where pulled pork, house-made flaky chips and a mix of peppers and cheeses are brought out under a glass dome of hickory smoke. Crazy good! Perfectly New Mexico, and a great Santa Fe experience...
