    Dr. Drew 'On Call'

    Conflicting Illnesses

I am in a fairly unique situation where I have to choose between my mental health and physical health. I have Bipolar 2 and it is very debilitating when I am not on medication. I become suicidal even. When I am on the correct course of treatment though, it causes bone marrow suppression. I have been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia and the only cause that my doctor has found is my medication. I have tried several different therapies and the ones that work cause all of my blood counts to drop. Currently I am in a moderate state with my platelets at a count of 44 and my white cell count at 3. However I don't know how long-term use of my medication would affect my bone marrow.

My question is how do I find a balance in my health? Is it more important to manage the bipolar, or will treating that cause my aplastic anemia to severely affect my health?
