    Farewell, Discovery

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JoelG0620, of Lakeland, Florida, shot this picture at the Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center on Tuesday, April 17. 'I have attended over 15 shuttle launches...I saw the opportunity to view Discovery's departure as a historic moment in our space program,' he says. 'It was bittersweet to see it leaving the space center knowing it won't return but also knowing that it will be on display as an example of the most complex machine ever built.'
    - ssesha, CNN iReport producer

It was a bittersweet day at Kennedy Space Center as the shuttle Discovery left the ground one last time. Part retirement celebration and part funeral,, the oldest remaining shuttle in the fleet departed Florida and headed for its final home in Washington DC.

This photo is from the final flyover of the Shuttle Landing Facility as the shuttle - a veteran of 39 missions and 149 million miles traveled - left behind its home for the past 28 years.
