    Spider Fighting (Video) : A tradition in the Philippines

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JherryPhons says his father and grandfather passed on stories to him about this traditional activity. He fondly remembers engaging in this tradition as a child: 'I was just happy and felt that I was king of the world every time my spider won a game.'

    He says that these particular spiders are Neoscona Crucifera. 'They are orb-weaver spiders in the family Araneidae, the third largest group of spiders. They are familiar builders of spiral wheel-shaped webs often found in gardens, fields and forests.'

    Spider fighting in the Philippines is a popular past time among rural Filipino children especially during summer season where these kids are on school break. The game starts by placing the spiders on opposite ends of a stick. Then, they will wrestle ferociously for a few seconds and the fight will end when one spider has successfully wrapped its foe with its web.

     

    This is one of my favorite activities during my elementary school days. We used to go the bushes, rice fields and climbed trees to find for the best spiders around. Those were the days, it was fun and something worth-remembering.
