    NASA Space Shuttle Discovery Flies Over DC Area

    Making the 26 mile trek from Woodbridge Virginia to DC can be both time-consuming and treacherous. The monotony of it can drive you crazy if you're not careful. On April 17, 2012 while listening to CNN on XM radio I found out that I would have a chance to see NASA spaceship Discovery flying over the DC metropolitan area.

    The space shuttle was on its way to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Chantilly. Just as I thought I had missed the flyover, it just appeared out of the tree line! People pulled their vehicles over to the side of 395 and simply took a moment to enjoy the history as it unfolded. I had a chance to reflect with a total stranger as Discovery flew near the National Mall. We were very close to the Pentagon and exchanged a few words about 911 and how proud a moment it was to see American ingenuity at its finest.

    I found it to be a unique experience to hear news on CNN and then see it played out in real life in front of me. I'm sure there will be tens of thousands of similar posts. This is just my individual experience.
