CNN PRODUCER NOTE     MaddyMBA says she needs to lose 120 pounds to reach a healthy weight. She is growing basil, thyme, oregano and other herbs, kale, collard greens, broccoli, zucchini, tomatos and cantaloupe in a raised bed and 5-gallon buckets. 'This is truly the first time I have planted a garden for which I am solely responsible,' she says. 'I am truly enjoying it. Now I understand why my mom enjoyed it so much. She had a great green thumb. I just hope I inherited it!'

MaddyMBA plans to chronicle her journey from seed to plate here on iReport. Join her, and plant one thing you can eat this year!
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

After years of terrible eating habits and being morbidly obese, I decided I wanted to change all of that. My first step was to set up a doctor's appointment to get a check up. Good thing I did. This is how I found out I had T2 diabetes. Major reality check!

Realizing that it was time to start eating real food I did what I thought would be the best thing to do. I ditched my regular supermarket and I started shopping at Whole Foods for 90% of my food needs. Cha-ching! Mucho money for healthy, organic fruits and veggies. Good thing farmers' markets are sprouting in Miami (pun intended). This helped lower the bill.

Being a hands on person I decided to try to save even more money by planting my own kitchen garden and with the help of a local landscaper that specializes in the matter a few weeks ago I got one.

I now have all kids of veggies and herbs growing and hopefully in a few weeks I will be enjoying the fruits (or veggies) of my labor.

Here are a couple of pictures of my raised bed. The first one is from the first week it was setup. The second one if the latest picture taken on April 18th.
