    Never Been A Gardener

My 3 year old son, my beautiful wife and I live in sunny, hot Palm Springs, CA. I am wondering if it is possible to grow a productive garden...even here. So we're going to give it a try. "Why?", you might ask.
I want my son to eat healthy foods free of pesticide. I want him to know where his food comes from and have a sense of connection to the earth on which he lives. I want to decrease our cost for food and I want to know if it can be done here.
I grew up in the midwest. Everyone I knew who had a backyard, had a large, productive garden. It was a part of life. The year passed with the changing of the seasons and the growing season was short, but fruitful. Harvest time MEANT something to me. I want that for my son. But short of packing up and moving, I don't know how to give that to my son in a place where it is almost always temperate and sunny.
So we are going to try a garden.
