Japanese Emperor meets with 5 Mekong leaders
TOKYO - Emperor Akihito met with the leaders of the Mekong basin nations of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam on Friday, the Imperial Household Agency said.
Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra , Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong, Myanmar President Thein Sein and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung are in Tokyo to attend the Japan-Mekong summit Saturday.
Crown Prince Naruhito and his younger brother Prince Akishino also took part in the event at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, according to the agency.
At the summit, the fourth of its kind, the Mekong leaders and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda are expected to discuss their cooperation in developing the region.
