    Preaching what I practice

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     MaddyMBA made a decision in March to take charge of her diet by growing vegetables right in her own backyard, and now she’s encouraging her family to follow in her footsteps. She says her green thumb is even rubbing off on her nieces. "They're having a great time with it. They love seeing the plants sprouting." But there's more to it than just fun and games. “There are so many food items out there that are really not healthy for you,” she says, adding, “You’re eating healthier because you know exactly what’s going in your mouth. It’s going from your backyard to your plate.”

After having started my own kitchen garden, I am now helping my sister and her family do the same.

My sister, just like me, has decided that having her own kitchen garden is a healthy and inexpensive way of having easy access to nutritious and flavorful veggies and herbs, free of pesticides and other chemicals.

This week, while vacationing at her home, I spent a morning with my nieces planting organic seeds in a mini-greenhouse so in a few weeks they will have seedlings ready to be transplanted.

Besides the obvious future harvesting of delicious veggies and herbs, my sister and her husband will be able to teach my nieces about sustainability, responsibility and self-reliance.
