Disability Rights Group Does Street Theater at SCOTUS
- ssesha, CNN iReport producer
National disability rights group ADAPT is currently performing street theater in front of the United States Supreme Court in Washington. The theme of the performance is the ADAPT Supreme Court is listening to testimony from people with disabilities and attendants who are advocating for the Affordable Care Act, particularly the Community First Choice option. ADAPT has been in the nation's capitol since Saturday. Members participated in civil disobedience on Monday, getting arrested in the Congressional building along with actor Noah Wylie, demanding that Medicaid be protected. Tuesday, ADAPT disrupted a hearing on Capitol Hill that allowed only corporate testimony about a rollback of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and would not allow members of ADAPT to testify. ADAPT also scored a huge victory on Tuesday when the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published the official rules for the Community First Choice option so that states can now implement CFC saving millions of dollars while keeping people out of institutions.
