New Zealand IS NOT for SALE
*Discretion advised: picture number six contains profanity.
- jne2013, CNN iReport producer
On my way back to the trains, I chanced on some action brewing infront of the Britomart. I asked what could this be - police escorts, banners, people shouting...getting ready to march - and media coverage.
The protest is all about New Zealand (or Aotearoa - 'land of the long white cloud') NOT being for sale. With the recent purchase approvalof hectares of farm land to a Chinese investment group, people are now wary that it's only a matter of time that other publicly owned assests will follow suit. Many feel that it's a precendent that should have not taken place - and that it opens this small country of barely 4.5 million people to possible opportunistic appetites of large foreign business groups. There had been accusations as well of self serving intentions on the part of the people who negotiate the deals.
