    May Day in Downtown LA

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     RCNorm shot these portraits of May Day "Occupy" protesters in downtown Los Angeles, California. The protesters were assembling and readying for a march down Broadway, through the center of the city. 'It seems that [the Occupiers] are frustrated with the slow progress of changing things for the better, but they haven't given up hope,' he said.
    - jmsaba, CNN iReport producer

For the most part, the May Day march in Downtown LA was very peaceful. The weather remained overcast and cool all day, but as the crowd grew in size, it made for a difficult commute towards the late afternoon and evening hours. The large and diverse crowd represented numerous groups, including advocates for Immigration Reform, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Rights, the Occupy movement and many others -- all converging in Downtown LA to exercise their right to peaceful demonstrations. Not surprisingly, with such a large crowd, there was also a strong presence from LAPD to make sure that things did not get out of hand and the peaceful interaction between law enforcement and the public shows that cooperative, community policing does work in Los Angeles.
