    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     respier shot these photos of May 1 Occupy protests for May Day in New York City, which aim to kick off an "American Spring" of sustained protest for the movement. 'It is overwhelming to see how positive and optimistic the movement has remained, and how joyous the demonstrators always are,' he said. 'The movement never declined or withered. We were in winter, and as with any other living thing, there is either hibernation or another state of dormancy. In the case of OWS, there was planning and training on an almost daily basis.'

    May Day 2012 NYC|Bryant Park, Union Square Park

     

    Thousands of workers, students Occupied Bryant Park in the morning, then marched down 5th Avenue to the beat of drums and a chorus of guitarists and converged with Occupiers at Madison Square Park. From there, then down Broadway to Union Square Park. DC37 handed out complimentary caps, speakers delivered unifying messages and 'our concerns' were woven on to the Maypole.  Occupiers from Brooklyn would join the rally at Union Square.
