Strand Bookstore employees' May Day march for a fair contract

Strand Bookstore, the largest independent bookseller in New York City, is in the midst of a contract crisis. Employees have been without a solid contract since last Fall and finally hit the streets on May Day to march for a fair contract.

Every 3 years Strand employees have a renewed contract. Last Fall, the revised contract proposed by Strand heads was met with disapproval which culminated in unionized employees voting overwhelmingly against the contract just a few weeks ago. The proposed revisions would cut employee benefits, personal days, and vacation days, and would raise healthcare premiums. One of the most troubling revisions was the proposed two-tier system in which employees who have been employed longer (were hired before last Fall) would have different benefits than those hired after. This has been considered a union-busting ploy and has caused outrage among the unionized employees. Strand employees are unionized under UAW [United Auto Workers].

Several employees did not go to work Tuesday while others wore black in solidarity with those protesting. A new contract has yet to be drawn up.
