May Day Protest Starts With a Whimper, Ends With a Roar

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ByHandMedia shot these photos of May 1 protests in New York City organized by the Occupy movement, which aim to kick off an "American Spring" of sustained demonstration nationwide. 'Thousands gathered for the march, and more people joined in as sympathizers, after reading the banners held up in the sky, and hearing pleas from the marchers,' he said. 'I believe most average people would support many of the issues these protests stir up. There are many issues not being addressed in the U.S. and need to be. I think protesters really feel they're fighting for all of us, not just themselves.'
    - jmsaba, CNN iReport producer

The Occupy Movement's planned May Day protests, got a slow start yesterday in New York City, possibly due to morning rain. However, the evening march brought out thousands of supporters from various organizations, including labor unions and activists groups. Sympathetic passers-by also joined in, as I witnessed hundreds of spectators in what looked to be business attire, cheering and stepping into the streets. Other than a few sparks, things were mostly peaceful.
