47,000 Voices Figuratively Silenced

On April 28th, 47,000 men, women and children gathered in protest and yet precious few ever knew. Local media in many states chose to ignore the demonstration though, they were notified well in advance of the event. One television station in Ohio was across the street from the rally site, where voices were raised in chants, speech and songs and still no one came to report on it. Why? My first thought was the media outlets in those states were owned and operated by those of opposing views. However; following the event, known sympathizing media outlets were approached about covering the story. It's a compelling story! Two women, who became angry by the many anti-woman bills being pushed through state governments, take action via Facebook. Within twenty-four hours, their newly created organization had over 500 members. In the weeks leading up to their first rally, the organization grew to 37,000 members nationwide, gained celebrity endorsements and that of more established organizations. Their first rally drew a total of 47,000 supporters spread over 55 cities. Such an impressive first event and yet, those 47,000 voices may as well have been gathered in a remote area. So, what is it that draws the media to such events? Is it violence? Is it police interaction? This is potentially a question that may never be answered. Unitewomen.org is a non-violent organization that follows the letter of the law when organizing events. We do not relish the idea of being hauled off in handcuffs nor, do we wish to see any harm come to any person or property. Our mission is to let the government know that we are unhappy with current events and that we are prepared to push back, that we will vote them out of office if they don't change their direction. Sadly, several state governments never got that message.
