In Memory of Dianna, Who Bravely Ran the Relay for Life

Last year I covered the Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) event in Second Life. At the time I was drawn to one particular lady whose avatar ran the virtual race with so much enthusiasm and complete devotion to helping others, that she brought tears to my eyes when she told me her story about her battle with cancer. Her avatar was named Mitra Lok and she told me her name was Dianna in real life. So it’s with great sadness that I've learned that Dianna has recently died. She had Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Haemolytic Anaemia.

Dianna had told me ‘I was a caregiver for my mother who died two weeks after last year’s Relay” I had said how brave she was and she answered “I’m not brave, I’m just fighting to stay alive and battling like everyone else to find a cure. I relay here because I could never do this in real life, I am just not well enough. Here, I can run the entire thing!” She said “I relay so my granddaughter won’t have to, I relay so she can grow up and possibly not ever have to have what I have gone through. I relay for all those that cannot, and of course, I relay for myself.” Dianna had admitted that she had cried through the whole thing as it meant so much to her.

I feel greatly honoured to have had the chance to meet Dianna, a beautiful lady who was so full of warmth and life. Her memory is an inspiration to us all, and let’s hope that a cure can be found for this dreadful disease very soon.

My deepest sympathies go to her family and friends at this sad time.
