    Broadcaster killed in Southern Philippines

    By Ben O. Tesiorna

MATI CITY -- A radio broadcaster was shot and killed by three unidentified assailants in a remote barangay in this city afternoon of May 8, 2012 (Philippine time).

Reports showed that 47-year old Nestor Libaton of DXHM-Mati just came from a fiesta in Barangay Ompao, Tarragona town in Davao Oriental.

The victim, along with a fellow broadcaster, Eldon Cruz, were onboard a motorcycle and were on their way back to Mati City around three in the afternoon when the armed men onboard another motorcycle tailed them.

The assailants reportedly fired shots in the air prompting the victim and his companion to stop their motorcycle. Libaton reportedly alighted from their bike and tried to confront the two assailants.

The suspect then fired shots at Libaton who sustained several gunshot wounds in his face and body. The victim was hit in his head at the lower right portion of his ear ( Post Auricular Area Penia Exit Anterior Auricular Area) and at the right side of his body (Right Entry 8th Intercostal Space Axillary Line).

    Libaton's companion was left unharmed.

Juvy Tanio, Mati City Information Officer and a colleague of Libaton in DXHM, said authorities recovered six empty shells and one live bullet from .45 and .38 caliber pistols.

Tanio said Libaton was not a hard-hitting commentator in the radio and was more commonly tasked in reporting about prices of commodities in the wet market.

Unconfirmed reports showed that Libaton was involved in a land conflict with some relatives though raising suspicion that the shooting incident could not be related to the victim's job as a journalist but personal in nature.

Authorities are however not discounting any angles as their investigation is still ongoing.

Libaton is the 152nd media worker killed in the country since 1986. Under the Aquino administration, he is the 12th.

Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat meanwhile said that they will exhaust all efforts to bring justice to the victim. The mayor ordered the police to look into all possible angles and leave no stones unturned in their investigation.

On June 14, 2010, Mati broadcaster Desiderio Camangyan was also killed during a fiesta celebration in Manay, Davao Oriental. One Police Officer 1 Dennis Jess Lumikid is being accused as behind the death of Camangyan.
