Unite Against the War on Women Rally in Louisville, Kentucky

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     gracecc says she helped organize and participated in a rally that united people together against the war on women in Louisville, Kentucky. She says the war on women is real, and she is surprised to meet people who claim it does not exist. 'I think it is remarkable that the people who say there is no war on women tend to be men, and if they are not men then they support an agenda that I believe to be anti-women,' she says. She says there has been frequent attacks on women, limiting their access to contraceptives as well as pushing issues that affect health care. She finds the war on women's health bizarre 'I wonder if this comes from a genuine belief that women should not be in control of having a child,' she says. 'I don't know why politicians have taken up this fight.' Richard Becker and Amber Garvey captured the images for this iReport.

"Women united can never be defeated!" chanted the crowd at the Unite Women rally in Louisville, Ky.

Approximately 300 people gathered on Saturday, April 28, 2012 to rally against the war on women. After an introduction by Ky. Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, keynote speaker U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth took to the podium to affirm his commitment to defending women’s rights in Washington.

Organized by the Ky. chapter of Unite Women, the Unite Against the War on Women rally featured speeches, musical performances and a poetry reading. Progressive organizations like Obama for America, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, the ACLU, and Planned Parenthood tabled the event.

As for Unite Women Ky., the rally is only the beginning of the group’s efforts to fight for women’s rights in Kentucky and in all 50 states. Those wishing to get involved should email unitewomenkentucky@gmail.com.

Rally speakers included Democratic Ky. Senate candidate Amy Shoemaker, Jo Ann Dale of the Kentucky Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Dr. Catherine Fosl of the Anne Braden Institute, Brenda Helm of the Teamsters, Derek Selznick of the ACLU and Elizabeth Sawyer of Emerge Ky. There were musical performances by Egret, Heather Summers, Meredith and Katy, We’re Friends! and CPHR DVN; there was also a reading by poet Bianca Spriggs. Unite Women organizer Lacey Guthrie MC’ed the event.
