When Time Stands Still. Beit Chelala, Lebanon
- rachel8, CNN iReport producer
Picture taken by Sandy Ibrahim.
"I shot this picture from the balcony of my brother-in-law's parents house in the village of "Beit Chelala" in Lebanon. It is a scene I enjoy contemplating every time I visit "Beit Chelala": the beautiful scenery with the priceless old Beetle that stands out from everything around it. This car has a pretty interesting story behind it. Its owner, a villager there, has been keeping it in the same exact spot for more than 30 years now, hoping to sell it at the "right price", stating it will increase in value over time. Every summer when my brother-in-law goes back home, he sees the car in the same spot and inquires about it, and the villager tells him that he's gotten some offers but not up to his expectations!
Seasons change, years pass by, and the car is still there, leading the villagers of "Beit Chelala" to the absolute conviction that this man is secretly hoping not to sell the car and hold on to its increasing legend as long as he can!
I often glance at this picture when I am back to corporate life in the US, and it instantly brings a smile to my face, as it takes me back to the slower-paced, relaxing lifestyle our parents and grandparents once lived in such villages away from today's rush of life, and where "social networking" has still retained its traditional meaning with neighbors interactive face-to-face, cherishing the simple pleasures and quality type of life. "Beit Chelala," in particular, is still a great representation of that era, as time, there, still stands still."
