    The Mighty Bald Eagle

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     speedy01 shot these photos in February 2011 of bald eagles in the wilds of Delta, British Columbia. 'The eagles usually congregate around a sod plant where they find food in the compost,' he said. 'At times there were dozens of them circling and diving. There were mature bald eagles as well as juveniles, and fights ensued after one of them caught some food and flied away with it, others followed and try to steal it in mid-flight.' His first photo was selected as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for August 22, 2012.

    The mighty Bald Eagle, is a symbol of strength and endurance. These are our Eagles captured in mid air, eating something, or simply looking majestic. Their wingspan is more than 2 meters and they weigh from 2 to 4Kgs for the males, and 4 to 7kgs for the females who are noticeably bigger and heavier.
    These birds are usually described as “Bald” which is not true at all, they do have a patchy head; the word bald derives from the word “piebald” meaning something spotty.
    An amazing fact is that if they lose a feather or two in one wing they also lose it on the other wing, nature has provided for it to keep their balance this way.
    Their sense of vision is so great that they can spot something 6 to 7 time’s farther than human eyes!
    Bald Eagles are at the top of the food chain and have no natural enemies. Except when humans interfere in their habitat and hunting habits.
    They live on average 20 to 40 years.
