the time is fast approaching 1pm in yaounde and this is serjou with the ireport microphone at centra bilingual practising primary school down town yaounde.we have just receive authorisation from the school head teacher to visit the campus.joined by seventeen ireporters we are now making our way into class one .goodmorning sirs the pupils greeted with much joy and happiness.we shokes hands with the class teacher who was very please with teams.listen to a child shouting .yee yee radio with microphone. we are now standing infront of the classroon observing the pupils. there 124 pupils in the classroon just for a single teacher alone .the ratios of teacher to pupils is 1: 124 the situation is quite disturbing. the teacher can not cope with the increase population. ireport eduction dest in yaounde has prepared sample of questions on papers for the pupils with prizes. the question stipulated the the pupils should solve the problem s in arithmetics.says the lphabets and counting of figures from 1 to 100.the calculations involved ddition and subtractions.after the quize all the scripts were collected and the marking exercise conducted by the 17 ireports. the results was very very poor.we wander if this children study back home.outoff 124 pupils in class one only 37 score an average making a pecentage of just 25.6 percent. the best 5 pupils received prizes from serjou. we asked sample qusetions to the pupils and notice that only 41 pupils attended the nusery school before coming into class one. others did not. we notice three categories of pupils in the classroom.nusery school attendance.non nusery school attendance and those coming from the village who could speaks only the mother tongue.those who performed well are those who attended the nursery school. non nursery school attendance performed poorly while mother tongue performed worst.when view the teacher record book for class one thesme results reflected.nursery school attendance performed well.according to jean piaget theory of cognitive development cited by huitt w. and hummel j. children passes through four stages of intellectual development . the sensorimotor stage; the pre operational , the concrete stage and the formal stage. according to the pre operational stage which involved children age 2 to 7 years0 says that children uses symbols and objects to perform their daily activities. these theory strongly hold because in the nursery school teachers uses symbols and objects and pictures to learn the pupils. in the nursery school the children are taught her to pronounce words and szay the alphabets.also how to count figures from one to 1000. those that came into clss one are missing seriously. they found difficulties in expression and calculation. we suggest that parents should send their children into the nursery school. the classroom teacher mr niba is in problem with the administration because he have not yet submites mark for the exams. this because the pupils wrote exams in maths, english language ;nuture study general knowlege; hygien, french, ,moral education and biblestudies .closed to 1200scripts are to be mark and the marks submited before friday.the ratios of pupils to teacher is 1; 124 something quite headhatch.serjou ngongang with the ireports eduction dest just back from centra billingual practising primary school downtown yaounde cameroon.
