Monkeying Around Britain
Wild Monkeys roaming the forests of...Britain? Well OK, they're not exactly wild at the Trentham Monkey Forest but they sure make a tremendous effort to make sure the Monkey's feel at home and the visitors feel like, well visitors!
At first you might feel the 140 plus Monkeys couldn't possibly be comfortable here because most of us assume Monkeys are typically found in tropical climates. That's sometimes true except that for these Macaques (primates). They normally call the chilly Atlas mountain region of Morocco their home. You may have seen that famous National Geographic photo of the Macaques taking a hot tub in the snow in Japan. With heavy fur coats in the winter they're more than comfortable. Some of the Monkey's at Trentham have long outlived their normal lifespan of 15 to 20 years including one Grandmother that is over 30 years old.
One of the challenges the Monkey Forest faces is overpopulation because if left to their own there would be a population explosion so birth control has been introduced. No word on whether this is an upcoming election issue : >)
