doing battle with the City of LB
First the City tried to take my handicap parking space at my residence and now they won't allow me to make my house accessible! I am going through the process of using my veterans benefits to make my house more accessible so I can stay in Long Beach as I age and my needs for accessibility increase. My doctors at the VA have begun using the words lift van and power wheelchair so I know given the amount of time these things take that I need to start the process. When I had to visit the planning department over the handicap parking space at my residence I did tell city Planning Department that I had a VA grant to make my property accessible for me that included some accessible off street parking for my vehicle so I had to put in a request for a reasonable accommodation to build out on the front of my house. This has since been done and the request has been denied. The front of my property on 10 th is unusable for anything and I only want to go out as far as the apartment building next to me but the city shot me down. They say I can go out the back but the room they want me to extend is the smaller of the rooms in my house and it will not give me ADA space requirements around my bed. It also would be taking my outdoor living area that I use for our adaptive rowing program for people with disabilities and my hydrotherapy. I love my house and Long Beach and don't want to move. I have been here since 1980 and on 10th st since 1997. The VA plan is to build me an accessible roll in shower, indoor laundry, accessible closet and accessible off street parking. It is a beautiful plan! It makes perfect use of a space that is not used for anything else. The kids waking back and forth to school are so vandilous and destructive that nothing can be done in anyone's front areas on 10th st and most of the structures are out to the side walks and city property lines. I simply cannot understand why they would deny my request. short of protesting and involving media I don't know what to do. I have already done battle with the Federal system of adjudication f or my veterans benefits why should I have to battle the city of Long Beach? I am a great citizen, I have amazing achievements and accomplishments, I have received many proclamations and awards from the city for my volunteer services in the disabled community, at the VA and as an athlete. I bring honor to the City of Long Beach and they stamp a denial quickly based on a two dimensional plot drawing without considering any kind of reasonable accommodation and denying me process thereof. Isn't that what the process is designed for, considering the human being, the circumstances and additional facts. I have been treated unfairly and not considered at all. I need to find some kind of resolution as the Department of Veterans Affairs has given me one month to either obtain a reasonable accommodation or consider moving. most recent articles http://w.espn.go.com/espnw/journeys-victories/7941500/ http://pvamag.com/pn/article/4422/london_bridge Angela Madsen 3631 e 10th st Long
