Institution re-naming continues to generate reactions.
Lagos: Students of the University of Lagos, Nigeria took to the streets on Teusday May 29th, and Wednesday May 30th; to protest the re-naming of the Institution by the Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan during his Democracy Day speech, from the University Of Lagos, Nigeria (Unilag), to Moshod Abiola University, Lagos (Maulag). According to students and allumnus, their grieviance was not against the late Moshod Abiola, who is seen as an Icon of true Democracy In Nigerian, and who's contributions to economic development through poverty alliviation, especially in the lives of the ordinary Nigerian can not be over-emphasised. Their grevience however, is that the Federal Executive Council, did not consult stakeholders before taking this decision, neither did they go through the appriopriate process. Bearing in mind that the Institution was established and named about 50 years ago, under the federal Parliamentary Act. this action by the president has continued to receive knocks from all angle and termed a 'miscalculated step'. considering the alaming security, economic and social challenges currently facing the nation, one would have thought that profering a lasting solution to these national needs would have been the focus of this administration.
