Korean Journalistic Racism Equals Total Outrage
This week a television program on a major Korean network news channel cast extremely racist aspersions on mixed race couples in the country. Even though Korea is traditionally a rather homogenous country, in the last 20 years it has enjoyed a dynamic influx of foreign residents from a variety of countries. For example, there is a highly intrenched English-speaking population that has made Korea a home away from home.
The video misguidedly makes the blanket suggestion that foreigners who date Koreans are dangerously licentious and lustful, that they cause HIV, and that they are not modest in their approach to interracial dating. Almost overnight, hundreds of mixed-race couples flocked to the social network, Facebook, and posted pictures of their happy families as a way of expressing their total shock and offense at the video. Many have made the point that since coming to Korea they have started loving, healthy, productive families.
Addtionally, this report has sparked wild outrage on Facebook and other social networks, leading some to call for a boycott of the television network for broadcasting the story. One online group in particular, in just a few days, has grown to over 5,500 members. Expats, along with Koreans, have decried this broadcast as racist and innapropriate.
