    City smackdown: Portland

    Close, but...

The debate is silly. For me, its like asking which is in the 99th percentile and which in the 98th. After living all over the place, I settled on the Pacific Northwest 30 years ago and have not regretted it: sometimes in an urban setting and sometimes not. Currently I live happily in a small town in Oregon a long ways from both cities, but if I had a hankering to move back to a bigger town city it would still be within our Pacific Northwest.

If you held a gun to my head for which one is "better" I would go with Portland. Not only for the reasons adduced by the other pro-Portlanders, but due ultimately to a factor not yet much addressed: what STATE each one is in. I don't mean the physical beauty--both states drip with agreeable scenery, but the moral choices made in their respective political cultures. Urban Washington, like urban California, is bigger and richer than urban Oregon--and that is because Washington and California have over the last 8o years been whoring after the dollars wrought by the military-industrial complex. And that explains I think some of the difference in character and culture between Seattle and Portland... Sorry, Seattle, I think you're terrific... I just think Portland is "terrificker!"
