    The 2012 Stockholm Marathon Kicks Off!


    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     theoyes says the Stockholm Marathon was held on June 2. He says there were more than 15,000 runners from all over the world. According to the marathon's organizers the run had an impressive turn out although it was cold and rainy, he explains. He says many of the Kenyan runners dreaded the weather and failed to place in the top twenty positions.

    The 34th ASICS Stockholm Marathon started on Saturday 1 June 2012 at 12 o'clock at Stadion. The jubilee race gathered over 15 thousand runners from all over the world. With 8,000 international runners from 83 countries the marathon is a multicultural festival.
    Famous runners from Ethiopia Derje Debele Tulu & Sahle Warga; Kenyan athlete Eljiah Kemboi took part in Men's category while in Deribe Godana, Teame Shumeye and Tigist Kifle from Ethiopia are taking part in this annual event. Regardless of the windy, rainy and cold weather, 15, 986 runners started the race and 14,686 of them crossed the finish line after running the 42Km marathon. In Women's category, Derebe Godana of Ethiopia won and clocked 2.40.19, Veronika Lopatina from Russia came second with 2.44.58 and  Belaynesh Jida finished third with 2.45.53 hrs. In Men's category Methkal Abu Drais from Jordan came first with 2.19.16 time and followed by Ethiopians Dereje Debele Tulu and Sahle Warga Betona who came third and fourth and clocked 2.19.45 &  2.20.07 respectively.
