Am I Better Off Than 4 Years Ago?

Being on Social Security, a fixed income, when asked if I am better off than 4 years ago, the answer is a resounding, "No."

The  cost of living has risen dramatically. The cost of groceries on some  products has gone up by as much as 25%. Gasoline costs have doubled.  Utility costs rose by as much as 35%.

For  those of us on Social Security there was no cost of living adjustment  in 2010 nor in 2011. According to the number crunchers there was no  reason to give a COLA and our current "salary" should cover costs.  Despite what the economists said, the cost rose at an alarming rate  forcing me and many others in my economic class to cut where there was  nothing to cut, tighten the belt which was already so tight it was  cutting off our air supply.

Now  in 2012 we were given a small COLA increase. That adjustment was  approximately $30 per month. Not enough to meet how much more grocery,  gasoline and utility costs had risen. But at least $30 is $30.

Am I better off than 4 years ago?

Yesterday  was my monthly payday. After paying rent, other bills and buying enough  groceries to last for one week I am left with $13 to last me the rest  of the month. Fortunately, I do not need to fill any of my prescriptions  or that $13 would be gone. I would have had to cut back about 3 days on  the groceries I bought as well.

Am I better off financially, economically?

The answer is an obvious, "No."

But I keep striving, keep holding on, keep surviving no matter the obstacles.

From the Cornfield, hope springs eternal of tomorrow being a brighter day.
