    Transit of Venus 2012

My wife and I have been gazing at the Sun with our special glasses and lenses since 3pm PST today. Clear skies in the Bay Area mean that we will have some great views of the transit right until sundown.

I rented a Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter to fit my Sigma 150-500mm lens. This is the best I could do since solar filters were sold out everywhere weeks in advance. Still my setup works without causing stress on the eyes. I can see the sun through the viewfinder.

Nasa Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA has a Venus viewing event till 8pm tonight. Several telescopes offer great views of Venus set against an orange background of the Sun.
