Young fishermen pose with their catch of fresh reef fish

If the reef were a garden, this assortment of reef fish, ranging from parrotfish to unicornfish, could probably be compared to the healthiest of harvests. At an average of $1.50/lb, the cost of reef fish in Pohnpei, Micronesia has not changed much within the last decade, despite the fact that fishermen are paying a minimum of $5.50/gallon of fuel. Record high gas prices are affecting even folk such as these young fishermen who maintain a traditional, self-sustaining lifestyle dependent on the land and sea.
