If you live in the DC metropolitan area, you are well aware of the never-ending construction along the entire Virginia side of the capitol beltway. I've lived in the area since 2006, and I've never seen it not under construction.

Did you all know that Virginia charges you taxes when you purchase a vehicle? Okay, every state has a sales and registration tax.

Did you also know that Virginia charges you a property tax, on your car, EVERY YEAR, based on the value of your car. Yep. Yearly property tax on your vehicle.

You would think that a car-tax would be used to build and fund up-keep on roads - even though many states build and up-keep roads WITHOUT a car-tax. Anyway, that's the whole point of it. Well not this time.

They are nearing the end of construction, which will FINALLY open up extra lanes on the beltway, a beltway that has the worst congestion in the nation. Finally. There is a catch, though. The extra lanes are TOLL LANES!

That's right, Virginians. Your car-tax is paying for the construction of NEEDED roads, that you will then be charged to use. Not only will you be charged to use it (easy pass), but anyone who owns an easy-pass will now pay a monthly fee, just for having an easy pass. This is also a new tax.

Gerry Connolly, VA-11 (Fairfax County representative in Congress) talks about the need for more roads, as population, dangerous driving conditions, congestion and accidents have all gone up; but he won't take the money he ALREADY MAKES TO BUILD ROADS to make life better for his residents. Nope. He'll take that money, then charge you to use the roads.

Typical democrat. They claim to want to do for people. No. They just want to find more ways to nickle and dime people. Six years of continuous construction, causing your 15 mile commute home to consistently take an hour to an hour and a half, and it ends with you being nearly forced to use the new roads, and then charged for doing it.

And if you're not from this area, you have no idea. It won't be a 25 cents charge. Just using the ICC in MD can run you $8 a day. The heaviest part of the beltway is the VA side and I guarantee you, you won't get from the Legion bridge to the Woodrow Wilson bridge, without AT LEAST paying $4 - ONE WAY.

What are you doing with the state taxes that are supposed to pay for roads? What are you doing with the taxes you get from the current toll road (267)? What are you doing with the money from everyone's car-property-tax every single year?

Typical democrat. Hide behind "social programs" and "helping everyone' so you can find ways to nickle-and-dime working people. I don't even care about the $8 a day, for me. I can afford it. I've earned my way to a good career. It's the principle that irks me. How can you force someone to use a road (which you charge taxes for, saying the taxes are for roads) then charge people to use it?
