"Unity Must Be the Goal of This Election" by W J O'Reilly
There is a terrible rift between Democrats and Republicans, a hateful, fearful, gnawing rift that resembles the horrific malaise
between North and South a hundred and a half years ago. You may recoil at the image of civil war and complain that it is too extreme. I disagree. the differences between liberal and conservative Americans, loosely described seem irreconcilable. Abraham Lincoln did what he could to preserve the union--but didn't live long enough to create any real unity between the winners and losers of the Civil War.
See, I'll vote for my guy, and you'll vote for yours and if your guy wins, I'll do my best to nurse my wounded ego. I hope you'll
do the same if my guy wins.
Because our unity must stand above the ideological differences between political parties. Unity must become the ultimate goal of this election. Victory has to mean that we somehow manage to see each other as team mates long after the ticker tape has been thrown and swept up.
Without unity, our very existence as a culture and as a people is in danger. the challenges of this century have only begun to be known and without the bond of unity, one citizen with the other, we cannot be assured of victory in the contests that will surely challenge us most profoundly, the struggles that may even place our very existence in question.
So when your guy wins, please try not to flaunt it too much in my face, and I will try not to be too obvious in my own end zone dance, should I get the chance.
Sooner or later, we will again be tested as a nation. We have known these moments: Pearl Harbor, 911, AIDS, the Nazi Invasion of Europe. We will be tested. And when that time comes, we need to turn to one another--regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, politics or views on abortion---and see ourselves as teammates of the first order.
And that's something to think about. I'm W J O'Reilly. Be well and see you soon.
