Refuge in the African House.
The African House, located at the Melrose Plantation, the oldest of all the buildings was built between 1796 and 1814. This French Creole cottage served as the first big house for the plantation. Many have speculated that it was built to resemble traditional African homes, although others claim its inspiration comes from French barns.
