88 still missing in Sarangani flashflood

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Freelance journalist bentesiorna has been reporting and photographing the relief efforts from Glan, Sarangani, Philippines, where flash flooding has killed two people and left 88 missing. He says the town has experienced flooding before, as it's in a coastal area. 'I have covered many flooded areas before like here in Davao City where about 21 died, then in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro where hundreds dies. The Sarangani flood is no different when it comes to destruction to properties and lives,' he said.

Eighty eight people remained missing as of Wednesday afternoon in Sarangani Province, more than a day after a flashflood ravaged a town there.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) said that of the 88, two are from the town of Glan while 86 are from Maasim.
The missing persons of Maasim are fishermen from said municipality who were caught in the heavy rainfall that hit Glan.

Seventy-five others were meanwhile rescued by the authorities.

A state of calamity was meanwhile declared in Glan where there are 568 affected families in 20 barangays.

Glan Mayor James Victor Yap presided over the MDRRMC wherein he approved the resolution declaring the state of calamity.

With four barangays “greatly” affected by the flashfloods, Mayor Yap said the declaration was prompted by reports from barangay captains that 16 more barangays have also been affected although assessment is still ongoing for the rest of the barangays.

Two men died while a total of 250 houses were destroyed by the flashflood.

Sarangani Governor Miguel Rene Dominguez identified the victims as Sagapo Cabigding and Rolando Mata. BOT
