Hot Pinks of Des Moines win 8th Annual Iowa Granny Basketball State Tournament
The Des Moines Hot Pinks team in the statewide Granny Basketball league won the championship at the 8th Annual Granny Basketball State Tournament held in West Des Moines, Iowa on the weekend of June 16-17.
The Hot Pinks beat the Cedar Rapids Sizzlers by a score of 56 to 50 in the championship game, held at Valley High School on the afternoon of June 17. The team previously won the championship in 2008.
Members of the team include Linda Burke, Jewel Chapman, Mary Kay France, Karen Gideon, Judith Harms, Nancy Jo Henning, Rita Leitzinger, Roxanne Menke, Carolyn Sutton, Patsy Tallman and Becky Webb.
In addition to the Hot Pinks and the Sizzlers, the teams which competed in this year’s tournament include the Ankeny Honey Bees, the Cedar Rapids Late Bloomers, the Center Point Model T’s, the Des Moines Car X, the Des Moines Classic Chassis, the Des Moines Lucky 13, the Indianola Motorcycle Grannies, the Lansing Great Dames and the Williamsburg Elites.
The tournament was held in conjunction with the 26th annual Iowa Senior Olympics, which comprised a variety of sporting events open to those age 50 and up. The Iowa Senior Olympics attracted athletes from around the state as well as from around the nation. The events included golf, tennis, bowling, track and field, Pickleball, softball, volleyball, three-on-three basketball, swimming, racquetball shuffleboard and horseshoes. Events took place at Valley High School and other venues in central Iowa.
