Tattoed by the oldest tattoo artist in the Philippines

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Sherbien traveled 15 hours to interview Whang Od, the last Kalinga tattoo artist in the Philippines, for a local talk show. Od is in her nineties and was previously featured on National Geographic. Sherbien, a tattoo virgin, got a tattoo of a centipede while he was there. 'She was in her old age but she does the tattooing perfectly,' he said. 'Her eyes are still sharp that she can draw a line and pierce my skin with the help of thorn from a tree brilliantly. She knows where to put pressure so that I can feel less pain.' The centipede tattoo symbolizes 'team work in the community and the head is me as a leader,' he said.

Tattoo is the ancient art in the Philippines. In Kalinga province, tattoo means beauty for women and men have to earn their tattoo by killing infiltrators or protecting their village.

Today, tattoo is already a dead art but their are people like me who are curious and would like to meet Whang Od, the oldest tattoist in the Philippines. She's in her 90s but she can do tattoo manually by the use of tree torns and charcoal.

I had my first tattoo from her. It was painful but worth it!
