New citizens: Why did you become American?

    Freedom

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     AdmirB207 says: 'I moved to the U.S. in 1997 and I was 13 years old. After the war in Bosnia my cousins who were here in the U.S. already asked us if we would like to come to the U.S., my parents were hesitant they didn't know if they really wanted to come or not. It was a tough decision for them. They finally decided and then we applied to emigrate as refugees. I got my citizenship in 2004 when I was in college. I had to take the civics and English test which was easy for me because I grew up learning those things in my history class in high school. The process was long; I had to wait for a while to do my fingerprints and wait to take an oath.'
    - elchueco, CNN iReport producer

I became an American because I wanted to vote, I wanted to be part of the country that gave me so much when I needed it the most. Getting out of Bosnia after 3 years of war was the hardest thing to do, America was there to help me and my family survive. I became an American because I love this country for what it stands and the values it holds. I became an American because the opportunities that come with being a citizen of the greatest nation in the world. This is why I became an American.
