    Coney Island-Mermaid Parade

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     RVCFOTO was at Coney Island attending the Mermaid parade. During the parade, she says countless number of people dressed in stunning costumes. 'There were so many that I loved, but I am partial to the ladies who painted their faces and held colorful parasols,' she says. She says the Mermaid parade is one of her favorite parades to attend. 'I love all the creative costumes and also this parade celebrates the beginning of summer,' she says.

    This year marked the 30th anniversary of the Coney Island-Mermaid Parade on Saturday June 23rd to celebrate the beginning of summer. This is the largest art parade and one of New York’s greatest summer events.

    Participants dressed in hand-made costumes walk down Surf Ave and continued on the famous Coney Island Boardwalk.

    This celebration pays homage to Coney Island’s Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954.

    The parade is followed by the Mermaid Ball so that participants and spectators can get together for cocktails and watch burlesque and sideshows acts.
