Jerusalem Forest Fires
This afternoon, I was caught in traffic as several fires were blazing in the Jerusalem Forest. Traffic was closed on the Jerusalem - Tel Aviv highway in both directions. It took 23 fire crews and 6 planes to battle the fires. The town of Ma'aleh Hachamisha and the local hotel were evacuated. Earlier today, firefighters were also called to extinguish a forest fire in the village of Lifta (near entrance to Jerusalem) which is abandoned. The fire chief said it is too soon to tell whether these fires are from arson. In the past 2 weeks, firefighters have been called to deal with approximately 200 cases of suspected arson in forests around Jerusalem.
