West Colorado Springs Near Air Force Academy in Pre-Evac as Fire Spreads Rapidly
The Waldo Canyon fire was spreading rapidly into the northwestern neighborhoods of Colorado Springs Tuesday afternoon and authorities are asking residents of the northwest neighborhoods to begin pre-evacuation plans. The orders are in effect for all neighborhoods from Cedar Heights to Peregrine in the far north, and includes areas just west of Vindicator and north to Orchard Valley Road to Woodmen Road. The air quality at this time is very poor as thick smoke and odor overhangs the entire mountain range from Garden of the Gods to Monument. Another point of grave concern is a possible contamination of the Rampart Reservoir that is in the line of fire. The Rampart Reservoir is the water supply for much of Colorado Springs. The fire at this time may be beginning a descent into Queen’s Canyon, not far from Orchard Valley and Woodmen Roads. The west border of the Air Force Academy is adjacent to the Queen's Canyon. Photo shows plumes of smoke behind Queen's Canyon on Monday evening, near the Air Force Academy on far northern Woodmen Road in Colorado Springs.
