China and Mercosur agree to strengthen economic cooperation
China and the countries of Mercosur today signed a joint statement committing themselves to strengthen their economic and trade cooperation and exchanges by 2016 to reach 200,000 million dollars.
The statement was signed today in the city of Mendoza, Argentina, as part of the biannual summit of South American bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay-country union suspended until April 2013 - and that definitely will join Venezuela in July.
The signing of this document was prompted by the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, during a recent visit to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
The statement does not, however, Wen made the proposal public on Monday to start exploring the possibility of creating a free trade area between the two pairs.
Mercosur and China agreed to convene a meeting of government representatives to, inter alia, to "jointly explore mechanisms and actions to increase and facilitate trade."
Both parties stressed "the importance of bilateral economic and trade cooperation and expressed their willingness to continue propelling through the adoption of joint measures to diversify the trade structure and increase in a balanced way, the flows of trade between China and each of the States Parties to the Mercosur. "
"To that end, both sides will strive to achieve in 2016 a trade of 200,000 million dollars," notes the statement.
In 2011 China exported to Mercosur by 48.451 million dollars, 34.5% more than in 2010, while it imported from the South American bloc by 51,033.7 million, up 37.9% yoy.
Although the balance is in surplus for Mercosur, this is due to the impact of trade volume between China and Brazil, since the other three members of the bloc in 2011 had its trade deficit with the Asian giant.
China and Mercosur also committed to promoting mutual investment, financial cooperation and collaboration within the MTS.
The parties expressed their "concern about the difficulties facing the Doha Round and agreed on the need to ratify his mandate focused on the development and to continue negotiations to reach an ambitious, comprehensive and balanced account of the interests and needs developing countries, particularly in the agricultural sector. "
Also expressed concern "by the uncertainty and insecurity generated by the current global economic situation resulting from the crisis with its epicenter in the developed economies."
