Severe Heat, Dangerous Lighting and 80 plus MPH Winds

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Ryn of Hughesville, Maryland, documents the aftermath of a powerful storm that rolled through her community on the night of June 29. Ryn says the storm caused extensive damage to cars and houses, cut off access to water and knocked down trees and power lines. "Our county had over 61,000 [people] lose power."

Late Friday evening I was on the computer as usual checking out iReport and my Facebook buddies. The lights started to flicker and the computer shut down. That is not surprising around here. We live in a very old farm house and the wiring leaves a lot to be desired. I decided to go ahead and take my dogs out for the last time that night. I had no idea it was lightening in the distance and rumbling thunder at the time. I figured I had lot's of time before the storm got to us. With in five minutes the trees in the woods surrounding us were bent over, my plants and flowers were being blown off the front porch. The dogs were going wild. I could hardly stand my ground the wind was so fierce. Before I could get them in the house the lightning was right over us. The sky opened up and it was raining buckets. The lights flickered again and then all went black. It is really dark out in the country, especially when the moon is covered by clouds. We were without power from Friday night around midnight until around 10:30 this morning.
We learned that the storm made national news with the winds going up to 80 plus MPH. Maryland, Virginia and DC were all affected. Our county alone had 61,745 families without electricity, air conditioning and for those of us on a well pump, no running water. There are still many with out power. Two deaths have been associated with the storm.
Going out to the store this afternoon we found the culprit of our outage, a huge tree snapped in half and splintered as well as the power pole itself. Although we have our power the old lines are still on the ground.
